What's the one thing a drug dealer should not do?
Although this sounds like the potential punch line to a bad joke, it's not. Ask yourself: if you were buying or selling drugs, what might you try not to do? Alert the authorities, perhaps?
That's what one New Jersey man accidentally did.
Nicholas Delear, Jr. accidentally sent a text message organizing a drug deal to the 10-year-old son of a police officer. Delear, 33, of Sussex, reportedly sent the text to the detective's son while using a new cell phone last Friday.
Delear meant to text a buyer interested in picking up a quarter pound of marijuana that he was trying to unload. In the message, the 33-year-old said he wanted to meet at a pizza parlor to exchange the goods for cash, the Associated Press reported.
But the recipient of the text wasn't who Delear intended - turns out the son of a lieutenant with the Township of Sparta Police Department got the message instead. The boy showed his father, Lieutenant Eric Danielson, the text Delear sent him, and the police officer took over, messaging Delear to set up a handoff, WWLP reported.
They arranged to meet at the pizzeria, where Delear and an undercover cop started doing the drug deal. But Delear suddenly became suspicious of the exchange, and fled when he realized the sale was actually a sting. Police located his vehicle shortly thereafter, but Delear didn't allow cops to search his car.
A police canine picked up the scent of drugs in the vehicle, allowing authorities to snag a search warrant. WWLP reported that Delear was arrested with more than four ounces of marijuana and around $620 cash.
