The nation of Iraq says its air force successfully struck a convoy carrying Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS, on Sunday, according to Fox News.
"The Iraqi Air Force carried out a heroic operation targeting the convoy of the criminal terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi," the official statement said. Bakr al-Baghdadi was headed toward a meeting in western Iraq when the convoy was struck. This is not the first time the Iraqi military has taken credit for carrying out strikes on Bakr al-Baghdadi. Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool, a spokesperson for the Iraqi Defense Ministry, says the military is investigating whether the Islamic State leader was in the convoy.
Sources in the hospital say that several senior Islamic State figures were killed in the attack, but leader Bakr al-Baghdadi is not among the confirmed dead, according to DNA India. His condition and whereabouts as of Sunday evening are unknown.
The official statement from Iraq's Air Force claims that the meeting site, to where Bakr al-Baghdadi was traveling, was also struck. "The location of the meeting was also bombed and many of the group's leaders were killed and wounded," it said.
The U.S. military has not offered any official comments on these events, and has neither confirmed nor denied the bombing, according to United Press International.
