Less than a month after Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s win against Canelo Alvarez, the question is quickly turning to Mayweather's next fight. England's Amir Khan reportedly will be Mayweather's next opponent for a May 2014 fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Khan is set to fight Mayweather in May and has already pulled out of a December fight against Devon Alexander, the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday. The official announcement is expected to come "in the next few days."
Mayweather advisor Leonard Ellerbe, however, dismissed the report as nothing more than a rumor.
"Floyd just fought two weeks ago," Ellerbe told the Los Angeles Times. "Can't he take a vacation before someone anoints the next guy? I have no idea (where this is coming from). We hear rumors all the time. Who wouldn't want to fight Floyd Mayweather? Everybody wants to be in the money pot."
Ellerbe added: "All that's rumors. There's nothing to say now. Floyd's still counting [pay-per-view] buys, some of that potential $100 million he'll make from [the Alvarez fight]."
Khan's camp took a turn to refute the report, too.
"Team Khan would like to dispel recent reports that Amir Khan has pulled out of a potential match-up against Devon Alexander on December 7th, taking up a fight against Floyd Mayweather in May of next year instead," read a statement released by Khan's management on Thursday, via The Telegraph. "Contrary to this story, Amir Khan is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached."
Khan, 26, is 28-3 with 19 knockouts after losing two of his last four fights. If Khan doesn't fight Mayweather, undefeated world light-welterweight champion Danny Garcia could be another possibility, according to The Times.
