A few weeks ago, it was reported that Tiger Woods would be interested in becoming the Ryder Cup Team's Assistant Captain if he did not qualify for the team. And the possibility of that appears to seem more likely as the Ryder Cup approaches.
On Friday, Woods called Fred Couples and also asked to speak to Davis Love III. Both Couples and Love had been spending the week as Jay Haas' assistant captains at the Presidents Cup. Love will be next year's U.S. Ryder Cup captain, according to Golf.com
"(Woods) was watching at home and he just had to call. He was talking about all the things he thought we needed to do, and he had a lot of ideas. We're already doing a lot of planning for next year, and it's great. It's part of the whole process that started after Gleneagles. Everybody is thinking about it, which is great," said Love.
This move by Woods has drawn some criticism from the likes of Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamlee. Chamlee said that Woods did not deserve the role because "I don't really think it's appropriate to give players leadership roles in an event they didn't show interest or passion for when they were competitors," according to For the Win.
Woods has been known to be a lone wolf and not exactly a team player, but of late, he has changed notions by offering his services as assistant captain for next year's Ryder Cup.
Love has tapped only Tom Lehman thus far to be an assistant. Woods is one of several names in the mix to help from the bench, but Love is "not waiting around" to see if Tiger can make the team, according to SB Nation.
