Amazon, the online retail giant, unveiled its revamped Kindle line up last month and is reportedly working on two smartphones .
Rumors have been going around of Amazon coming up with a 3D smartphone by this year. A recent post on Hacker News has added to the speculations stating that Amazon is planning two smartphones. The first one is an entry level smartphone running Fire OS, the same as on Kindle Fire tablets and the other is a 3D smartphone.
There are not many details available on either of the smartphones except the fact that the mid-range handset that will retail at a relatively lower price, will be released by end of 2013, whereas Amazon will start shipping its 3D handset only next year.
As hinted in earlier rumors, the budget-friendly handset might be offered free of cost by Amazon although the Seattle based e-commerce company has completely denied the fact. "We have no plans to offer a phone this year, and if we were to launch a phone in the future, it would not be free," a spokesman from Amazon said recently, reports geek.
The 3D smartphone will have four cameras incorporated on each corner of the move, keeping a constant note of the eye/head movements of the user to give a 3D impression. The device is likely to have one more camera at the rear although the operating system for the device still needs to be confirmed, reports HackerNews.
The 3D handset also called the 'Smith' was supposedly to release in the third quarter of 2013, but it is reported that the engineering team has still not come to grips with the software or the hardware for it and hence, the launch has been postponed.
Smith is said to include the image recognition feature that will let users look for similar pictures on the Amazon database. This new features is similar to Google's reverse image search that facilitates the user to look for any image on the virtual ware house of Google.
Following the footsteps of other global smartphone manufacturers, Amazon is acting secretive about the two smartphones, reports Techcrunch.
The largest online retailer is also reportedly working on a set top box that will stream content to television sets. Amazon has not disclosed anything officially as of now but it is allegedly in talks with software developers and media partners for its forthcoming media device slated for Christmas, reports the Wall Street Journal.
