Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the beef lynching incident in Dadri as "unfortunate and undesirable."
"The Dadri incident is undesirable and unfortunate. But what is the central government's relation with these incidents", the Indian premier said in an interview, according to Press Trust of India. This is Modi's first comment on Dadri lynching incident, where a Muslim man was killed by a violent mob over rumours of eating beef.
He also accused opposition parties of indulging in politics of polarization by raising the issue. "It was an extremely sad incident. The Bhartiya Janta Party does not support such incidents. The opposition is playing communal card by blaming us with the Bihar election in mind," according to India Today.
Opposition parties slammed Modi's statement on the beef lynching incident as "too little and too late."
"He (Modi) speaks in so many countries...if cricket team wins he immediately speaks and on other things also he immediately speaks up. This is a matter of country's unity, then how can the Prime Minister speak over this after delay?" JD (U) chief Sharad Yadav said, according to The Hindu.
The 52-year-old Muslim man, Mohammad Akhlaq, resident of Dadri village in Uttar Pradesh, was beaten to death by villagers over the rumours of beef eating in the last week of September. Modi's government has been criticised for not curtaining the activities of Hindu hardliner groups associated with ruling BJP party.
Modi's remarks invited harsh reactions on Twitter. Read some of them below.
