Migrants who are fleeing war and poverty from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan are finding a new challenge awaits them on the border of Hungary and Croatia. Hungary officials on Thursday said they have finished building a fence on the southern border of Croatia. The fence will be used to help streamline the heavy amount of migrants that are traveling to Hungary, according to Yahoo! News.
Hungary sealed its border with Serbia and began construction the fence in late September. Sealing the border with Serbia had actually diverted tens of thousands of migrants which then had to travel up to Croatia. There have been more than 386,000 migrants that have made their way into Hungary during 2015. Officials estimate that the number could rise to more than 700,000 by the end of the year, reported Spanish News Today.
"Hungary's fence on its border with Croatia is finished and the army and police are capable of sealing off the border once a decision to do so is made," said a government official.
The fence isn't where the last line is drawn; the government is currently deciding when it will completely seal off the border. "We are ready to close the border. The security closure has been completed on the Hungary-Croatia border, the government is now able with the help of the police and army to seal the border," Janos Lazar, a government spokesman, told reporters in Budapest.
Most of the migrants don't end their journey in Hungary but instead continue into Germany, Scandinavia and the Austrian frontier, reported Focus Information.
