The San Jose Sharks could potentially be without one of their star players depending on the content of an announcement, expected to come Friday. Sharks forward Logan Couture suffered what is being called a "fluke fall" during San Jose's practice on Thursday. The extent of the injury is not yet known, but Couture was seen leaving practice in a walking cast, according to John Shannon of Sportsnet. He was also using crutches, per Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News.
Couture would not comment on the injury, per Pashelka, and Sharks coach Peter DeBoer was not available, but the protective boot the young center was wearing covered his right foot and ankle. GM Doug Wilson refused to speculate on the extent of Couture's injury.
"I don't jump to any conclusions," Wilson said, via Pashelka. "I'll let the doctors do their work and they'll do a proper evaluation."
Couture was injured during a five-on-five drill, according to Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area. The 26-year-old, who is in his seventh season with the club, went down in the corner and looked to be in "significant pain," per Kurz. He was eventually helped off the ice by Brent Burns and Brenden Dillon, but was putting "no weight whatsoever" on his right leg.
Couture has been the pivot for the team's best line through the early portion of the Sharks season. Playing between offseason addition Joel Ward and Sharks mainstay Patrick Marleau, Couture has one assists and a plus-one rating.
