Licho Escamilla, who was convicted of killing Dallas police officer Christopher James, was executed on Wednesday at 6:31 p.m., according to Yahoo! News.
Esamilla, 33, was the 12th person to be executed in Texas this year. He was taken to the state's execution chamber in Huntsville, Texas, and was executed by a lethal injection.
As Escamilla prepared to die, he looked over to the slain officer's daughter, saying, "Shelby, God bless your heart," moments before the injection was administered, according to WFAA 8 ABC.
"The state of Texas has refused to listen to God's children. They will have to take that up with God. Let everyone know that it's not over," he said. His last words were, "warden, that's it."
Escamilla, nick named, K.J., shot and killed James, who was working as an off-duty security guard at a nightclub called DMX. An altercation happened at the nightclub, and James along with another police officer attempted to break up the fight when Escamilla began to shoot, wounding both officers.
When Escamilla was attempting to flee the scene, "Licho paused where Officer James had fallen and fired additional close-range, fatal shots aimed at James' head," according to court documents.
Escamilla was apprehended and received treatment for a minor gunshot wound at a local hospital.
This was not Escamilla's first run-in with the law. When he was 19 years old he was wanted for the killing of a neighbor in Dallas.
Last week the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles decided against a reprieve and clemency, and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to review Escamilla's case. No appeals had been officially filed, according to the Huffington Post.
There were testimonial records that showed Escamilla bragging about killing James and injuring another officer while he was in the emergency room being treated for his gunshot wound.
