Following the trend of Staples, GameStop has also announced that its physical stores will be closed on Nov. 26 in order to allow its employees to spend Thanksgiving with their families. The company aims to break the trend of retailers who force their employees to work during holidays, denying them of having quality time with loved ones during national holidays, reported WPXI News.
Mike Buskey, executive vice president and president of U.S. stores at GameStop, says that the company's decision to close its physical stores was the right thing to do.
"We believe strongly that our customers and associates should have the opportunity to spend the Thanksgiving holiday relaxing with family and friends, and not worrying with the stress of where to find the best shopping deals," he said, according to CBS Sacramento.
"We know this is in stark contrast to what many other retailers are doing, but we are taking a stance to protect family time during this important holiday."
Due to intense competition in sales, retailers have started opening their physical stores during national holidays, including Thanksgiving. Dubbed the "Black Friday Creep," Thanksgiving has become yet another day at the job instead of a day of family time for employees.
Instead of opening on Thanksgiving, GameStop plans to have special events before Thanksgiving instead. It will also open its physical stores at 5 a.m. local time on Black Friday, Nov. 27. Customers who wish to buy items from GameStop during Thanksgiving can still do transactions on the company's online store.
