Weight Watchers is lucky to have Oprah Winfrey on their side, as everything she touches turns to gold. The former talk show host and billionaire media mogul signed a five-year deal Monday, becoming a part owner and investing $43.2 million for a 10 percent stake in the weight loss company, according to the Associated Press. The company's shares doubled as soon as her name was officially associated with them, already earning her back more than what she originally invested.
As someone who has publicly struggled with her weight for years, she will be participating in all Weight Watchers has to offer and will be using the mobile app and working with a professional coach. She will also be letting them use her name and image for any products and services they wish to promote, as well as make appearances on their behalf.
"Weight Watchers has given me the tools to begin to make the lasting shift that I and so many of us who are struggling with weight have longer for," Winfrey said in statement. "I believe in the program so much I decided to invest in the company and partner in its evolution."
This new partnership will help Weight Watchers' transform their already successful brand into so much more. "We are expanding our purpose from focusing on weight loss alone to more broadly helping people lead a healthier, happier life," President and CEO Jim Chambers said, according to Entertainment Tonight. "Through our conversations, it became clear that there is a tremendous alignment between Oprah's intention and our mission. We believe in her remarkable ability to connect and inspire people to realize their full potential is uniquely complementary to our powerful community, extraordinary coaches and proven approach."
"We're thrilled to share some big news today - Oprah Winfrey has joined our Board and is a part owner of Weight Watchers!" the company's Facebook reads. "She's a Member on her own personal journey toward success, and she believes so much in what we do and our mission that she wants to work with us to inspire people around the world to lad healthier and more fulfilling lives. We are thrilled to count one of the world's most inspiring women among our #WWFamily and we are so excited for what the future holds! 'O' it's an exciting day!"
Winfrey is now joining many other celebrities who have not only used, but have become faces for Weight Watchers, according to Pop Sugar. Jennifer Hudson and Jessica Simpson have both lost so much weight on the program and are still proud spokespeople for the brand.
