A cop from the New York Police Department has been indicted for stealing a townhouse in Brooklyn. Blanche O'Neal, 45, was charged Monday during an arraignment for grand larceny and perjury. She allegedly produced a faked deed declaring herself the owner of the property, which originally belonged to her deceased neighbor.
"This defendant allegedly stole a house from its rightful owner with the stroke of a pen, apparently hoping no one would notice," said District Attorney Ken Thompson, according to USA Today. "But her brazen actions have unraveled and she will now be held accountable."
"That she is a veteran NYPD officer makes this alleged crime all the more disturbing," added Thompson.
According to the D.A., O'Neal filed a deed transfer in 2012 that said her dead neighbor's nephew sold her the townhouse for $10,000. She was busted when the nephew tried to sell the home.
O'Neal was the one who initially contacted authorities, according to CBS New York.
"Officer O'Neal reported that someone was basically trying to commit deed fraud against her," said Thompson.
"The Sheriff's Office is actively investigating real property theft and related financial crimes throughout New York City. Those who think they can simply file false documentation with the NYC Department of Finance should take notice. The Sheriff will aggressively investigate and arrest any party involved in such criminal activity," said Sheriff Joseph Fucito, according to the Inquisitr.
