Mexican officials have announced that they've arrested the suspected mastermind and five others who orchestrated Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's daring escape from his prison cell.
Attorney General Arely Gomez said that the alleged mastermind is a member of Guzman's legal team who had access to the Altoplano prison and was able to exchange information with the infamous drug lord, reported FOX News. The suspect also reportedly relayed orders and payments to others involved in the jailbreak.
"He used that cover to become a link between those who built the tunnel as well as making the payments," said Gomez.
She declined to name any of the other five, which also include El Chapo's brother-in-law, who reportedly organized and supervised the construction of the tunnel that El Chapo used to escape, according to CNN.
The other four members were: a longtime pilot for the Sinaloa cartel who allegedly participated in the escape and in drug trafficking operations; the person who allegedly coordinated the purchase of the property where the tunnel out of the prison ended; the person who allegedly organized and directed the construction of the prison tunnel and other tunnels along the U.S.-Mexico border; and the person who allegedly handled the transfer of the property where the tunnel was built.
Gomez went on to give new details on what El Chapo did and where he went following his escape, reported Reuters.
Once El Chapo made his escape, he traveled about 87 miles north on land to San Juan del Rio in central Queretaro, where a small plane was waiting to fly him away.
