Mississippi State will be without their top cornerback for the rest of the season, as Will Redmond reportedly tore his ACL sometime this week, according to Michael Bonner of the Clarion-Ledger.
Redmond reportedly sustained the injury during practice sometime this week, according to NBC Sports' John Taylor. It's highly unlikely Redmond returns to the field this season, and that is a devastating blow for the Bulldogs. Redmond is projected as one of the best corners in the country and is expected to be one of the top defensive backs taken off the board in the 2016 NFL Draft.
Some see Redmond as the seventh best corner in the country, according to Walter Football. Prior to this season ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. wrote that Redmond was the top prospect at his position in the country.
Redmond leads Mississippi State corners with 25 combined tackles and two interceptions this season. He's is a senior and has played in over 30 percent of Mississippi State's games, and he is no longer able to request a medical redshirt.
The Bulldogs have not made any public comments on Redmond's status, but it looks like his time for the team may be done. Cedric Jiles and Tolando Cleveland will need to fill the void left by Redmond. The Bulldogs are 5-2 this season, but their two losses are to SEC opponents. Without Redmond, teams may look to attack the Bulldogs' secondary, and head coach Dan Mullen is likely preparing for that this Saturday against Kentucky.
