New York Giants RUMORS: Brian Kelly Could Fit As Head Coach, If Tom Coughlin Struggles

The New York Giants could be interested in Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, as NFL general managers reportedly pair him with that job based on his coaching style, according to NFL reporter Ian Rapoport.

Giants head Tom Coughlin has consistently been on the hot seat in New York, and this year is no different. Coughlin has won two Super Bowls as the Giants head coach, but since winning the Super Bowl in 2011, his team has failed to make the postseason.

Coughlin has the Giants at 3-3 this season, and they are currently in a tight fought battle to win the NFC East. The Giants are tied in first place with the Philadelphia Eagles, but they face the Cowboys today, who are only a half game behind New York.

The Giants suffered a devastating loss to the Eagles on Monday night 27-7. "Quite frankly, what happened down in Philadelphia is not the M.O. of this team," said Coughlin, via Newsday. "That's not the way they define themselves, it's not they way they've been playing."

The Giants lost to the Cowboys and Eagles four times last season, and if they fail to get wins against either NFC East rival, it could be Coughlin's last season in New York. The Giants will likely need to win the NFC East for Coughlin to stay in New York or will at least need to be in contention for a playoff spot at the end of the season.

Brian Kelly has consistently had a strong running game and defense at Notre Dame, two traits that the Giants are likely interested seeing implemented into their team. Kelly has a 104-43 record in college and 5-3 record in bowl games. The Notre Dame head coach has been a consistent winner in college, and some think that will translate to the NFL.

Right now, Coughlin looks to be safe in New York but will need the Giants to be fighting for a playoff spot come December, or the Giants may start looking for other coaching candidates.
