The Miami Hurricanes have fired Head Coach Al Golden a day after taking the biggest loss in program history, according to Hurricanes Sports. The University of Miami Director of Athletics Blake James made the announcement Sunday. Assistant coach Larry Scott will serve as the interim head football coach for the Hurricanes for the rest of the 2015 season, according to ESPN's Matt Fortuna.
"Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community," said James, via Hurricanes Sports. "However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men."
Golden held a record of 32-25 in five seasons as the Hurricanes head coach, and lead them to two bowl games. Although Golden led Miami to two bowl games, they lost both, and his best record in the four previous seasons was 9-4. The Hurricanes were 4-3 this season, but after Saturday's blowout loss to Clemson, it was likely a decision the school felt it had to make.
The Hurricanes have won five national championships in the past, but it's been over a decade since they have even been a national title contender. There have already been rumors of NFL coaches that could turn this program around. Miami will look for Scott to turn this season around this year, but A.D. James will try to find a replacement that can take the Hurricanes back to the top of college football.
