Former comedian Jimmy Morales has won Guatemala's presidential run-off election, partial results showed late Sunday night.
Forty-six-year-old Morales, former comic actor and TV personality with no political background, is set to become Guatemala's next president as official results showed him winning more than 70 percent of the vote with his opponent Sandra Torres, a former first lady, trailing far behind, according to Associated Press.
"With this election you have made me president. I received a mandate, and that mandate is to fight the corruption that has consumed us," Morales said after the outcome, according to Tico Times.
Guatemalans cast their ballots in a presidential run-off election on Oct. 25 after Morales had earlier failed to secure a 50 percent vote in first round of Presidential election to avoid run-off.
The presidential election, plagued by scandals, took place after the resignation and arrest of incumbent President Otto Perez Molina in connection with a massive bribery scandal, according to BBC.
Molina had resigned as president following a vote from Congress that stripped him of immunity from prosecution, as HNGN reported previously. Molina, along with more than 20 public officials - including former Vice President Roxana Baldetti - were allegedly involved in bribery, allowing foreign companies to import goods into the country without paying customs duties in return for bribes.
