After successfully recalling two Democratic state senators who supported a controversial gun control law in Colorado last month gun rights advocates are launching a new campaign to recall an additional supporter of gun control, according to the Christian Science Monitor.
This time they have turned their sights to state Sen. Evie Hudak, a Democrat from a district just north of Denver. Supporters of the recall will have to collect 18,900 signatures by Dec. 3 to force a recall election. That is more signatures than were required to force either of the two other recall efforts, according the Washington Post.
Both Senate President John Morse and Sen. Angela Giron lost their seats despite millions of dollars coming in from out of state to support their campaigns. Those two legislators were from areas that lean more liberally than Hudak's district does so it is likely that if the recall question can make the ballot that Hudak will lose her seat as well, according to the Washington Post.
Less than six months ago an attempt to garner the signatures to force a recall against Hudak fell short. This time a group calling itself "Recall Hudak, too" is spearheading the effort, according to the Denver Post.
"She has infringed upon our constitutional right to keep and bear arms," Mike McAlpine, a spokesman for the group, said in a statement. "She has voted to make all citizens less safe and to drive hundreds of jobs from Colorado."
Colorado was the site of two of the deadliest mass shootings in American history; the recent Aurora theater shooting and the Columbine school shooting. After the shooting in Newtown, Conn., a strong gun control law was passed through Colorado's Democratic-controlled legislature.
"A small group is seeking to undo the will of voters, who re-elected me to the Senate last November," Hudak said in a statement. "Unable to defeat me then, they are now attempting a political power grab using a low voter turnout, no mail ballot recall election strategy."
In the previous election Hudak barely was able to defeat Republican Lang Sias by less than 600 votes. Due to the successful recall effort in September Republicans would be able to gain control of Colorado's state senate if they are able to recall Hudak, according to the Washington Post.
