Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul rejoined the New York Giants on Tuesday, signing a one-year contract that, according to a report from earlier in the day, is likely heavy on incentives. Pierre-Paul, of course, was injured this offseason during a freak fireworks accident over the Fourth of July weekend. Recent pictures revealed that Pierre-Paul has lost at least one finger, along with portions of several others.
Still, despite Pierre-Paul returning with fewer digits, the pass rush deficient Giants are all-to-happy to see him back in the fold.
"It is just good to have Jason back in our building," New York coach Tom Coughlin said, via the team's website. "You can feel his energy and his desire to overcome what he has had to endure since July. His spirit is undeniable, and he is anxious to get to work with (defensive line coach) Robert Nunn and Spags (defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo), as well as our medical and strength and conditioning people."
Seven weeks into the 2015 NFL season, Spagnuolo's group has managed just nine sacks, the second-lowest total in the league. Pierre-Paul sounds like a guy who's ready to get back to work.
"I'm very excited to be back," Pierre-Paul said moments after signing his contract. "I'm getting ready to do what I have to do. I've been training down in South Florida with my trainer. Every day, I got up at 7:30 and lifted weights, I've been doing what I have to do to stay in football shape."
A six-year NFL veteran and two-time Pro Bowler, Pierre-Paul is set to begin working with the team's medical staff. The Giants have a two-game roster exemption for Pierre-Paul during which time they can determine his readiness to return to the field.
Tuesday's earlier report suggested that there is "optimism" that Pierre-Paul could return for Week 10, though that seems unlikely.
