The New York Knicks are set to begin their 2015-16 season with a little bit of optimism, as they have made some tweaks to their roster and expect to compete for a playoff spot. At the end of the preseason the Knicks had a decision to make for their final roster spot, and instead of keeping one of their training camp invitees on a non-guaranteed contract they decided to leave the spot open. There has been a lot of speculation about what the Knicks plan to do with that open roster spot, but it is not expected to go to Maurice Ndour, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.
Ndour played for the Knicks summer league team and was probably the most impressive player on the team, even though it included the Knicks' two first round picks, Kristaps Porzingis and Jerian Grant. Ndour used his play in the summer league to get a deal with the Dallas Mavericks, as they offered him more guaranteed money than the Knicks did and he seemed like a good bet to make their final roster.
In the end, though, Ndour was cut by the Mavericks as he is dealing with a serious stress reaction in his leg and is out indefinitely. It is very unfortunate timing for Ndour to have this injury, as he had an impressive offseason and would likely have had a roster spot ig he had been healthy.
The Knicks reportedly have no interest in bringing Ndour back, and there are a couple of reasons why. The first reason is the injury, for obvious reasons, and the second is that they are deep in the frontcourt. The Knicks go three deep at both the center and power forward positions, so Ndour is not needed in New York.
The Knicks have reportedly said that they would like to use that final roster spot on a guard that can both shoot the ball and handle it. It was reported last week that they had no interest in Jimmer Fredette despite the fact that he fits that description, so it seems like they will wait it out for that final roster spot until they find somebody that they really like.
