Fans who are eagerly awaiting next year's "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" are undoubtedly excited to see the DC Extended Universe debut of Ben Affleck's Batman, Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman. But aside from the iconic heroes finally joining up on the screen, fans should also be looking forward to "Dawn of Justice's" grounded handling of Superman and the catastrophic events in 2013's "Man of Steel."
Rarely do superhero movies ask if a hero actually should be doing what they're doing or if they can be trusted, which Zack Snyder's new film will cover in great detail. In fact, "Dawn of Justice" will make an entire Senate hearing out of it.
One of the main aspects that is expected to be followed up on in the movie is Superman's choice to kill General Zod via vicious neck snapping, but it's a decision that "Man of Steel" writer David Goyer defends within the context of the movie.
"You have to do what's right for the story," Goyer told Nerdist. "In that instance, this was a Superman who had only been Superman for like, a week. He wasn't Superman as we think of him in the DC Comics...If you take Superman out of it, what's the right way to tell that story?...The moral, horrible situation to be in is to actually be forced to kill, not wanting to, the only other person from your race. Take Superman aside, I think that's the right way to tell that story."
This decision was divisive among fans. Some embraced the new direction and tone that Warner Bros. was going for with this iteration of Superman; others thought it undermined several decades worth of character development and history.
The collateral damage and loss of life that resulted from the Battle of Metropolis is the motivating factor for Affleck's Batman to come after Superman. We'd also guess that the Caped Crusader will have a few tips for non-lethally dispatching enemies once the two eventually join forces.
"Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" will hit theaters on March 25, 2016.
