The Kansas City Royals continue to prove how unpredictable and relentless they are. It took one big inning and another dominant performance from Johnny Cueto to defeat the New York Mets 7-1 in Game 2 of the World Series.
At the beginning of the night Jacob deGrom looked as if he'd be throwing another one of his customary playoff gems.
Instead, New York is now down by two games heading back to Citi Field and they'll be playing with their backs against the wall. They figured their chances were good with deGrom on the mound tonight, but the right-hander allowed four earned runs on six hits and three walks in just five innings.
He allowed four runs total in his previous three postseason starts against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs.
On top of that, the Mets' offense could only muster two hits and three walks on the night as Cueto pitched a one-run complete game to earn his second career postseason win.
The Royals broke it open in the bottom of the fifth with four runs off deGrom. Alcides Escobar started the onslaught with an RBI single. Eric Hosmer then added a two-run single and Mike Moustakas ripped an RBI single to give the Royals a 4-1 lead. deGrom was pulled after the inning and the Mets showed no signs of making a comeback.
Cueto retired the next nine batters in a row and recorded 15 consecutive outs before walking Daniel Murphy in the ninth.
Kansas City put the nail in the coffin after adding three more runs in the bottom of the eighth off Jon Niese. Alex Gordon's RBI double, Paulo Orlando's sacrifice fly and Escobar's RBI triple made the score 7-1.
Lucas Duda was the only Met to register a hit on the night. The rest of the Mets' offense went 0-for-24 with a run scored and three walks.
The Mets' veterans will need to wake up if they want a shot to keep this World Series competitive. David Wright and Yoenis Cespedes are just 4-for-21 with one run scored, no walks and five strikeouts in Games 1 and 2.
New York will send Noah Syndergaard to the mound to face Yordano Ventura in Game 3 at Citi Field on Friday night. The two youngsters will battle to put their team in a better position in the 2015 World Series.
