A building at San Jose State University was placed on lockdown Thursday morning after someone reported spotting a gunman on campus, NBC News reported.
Pat Harris, a spokeswoman for the university, said only Sweeney Hall was put on lockdown following a "credible" report of a white male, dressed in all black and armed with a handgun, seen walking toward the building. The rest of the campus remains open.
According to student Jonathan Aguayo, he saw the man and believed he was carrying a rifle.
A text message warning was sent to students at 9:22 a.m. which read "Man with gun call - police checking Sweeny Hall - shelter in place." NBC reported that some students posted frustrated messages on Twitter, claiming they did not receive the text while others did.
Student Ashliegh Nikol said three armed police officers entered her classroom and walked up and down the aisles looking for the potential gunman. One officer was overheard telling the professor they were "looking for a guy with a gun and to stay in class until the alert says we can leave."
Campus police are working with the San Jose Police Department as well agents from the Department of Homeland Security.
Sweeney Hall houses the College of Education and is blocked off with yellow police tape. The student-run newspaper, the Spartan Daily, has been uploading notifications through their social media accounts.
On Twitter, the newspaper said the gunman was not located in the building.
"AlertSJSU A thorough search of Sweeney Hall did not reveal anything. Sweeney Hall is open for business. Resume normal activity," Spartan Daily tweeted.
