Tennis champion Serena Williams is serving as the guest editor and cover girl for the November issue of Wired, according to The Huffington Post.
The 21-time Grand Slam winner addresses many topics, such as equality for women and girls, standing up against bullying, and a happiness hack. Williams wrote that she used her passwords for her phone and her computer as daily affirmations.
"I started using affirmations as the passwords to my phone and my computer." Serena writes. "(No, I’m not going to tell you what my current affirmation is!) You should try it. You’ll be surprised how many times a day you log in and have an opportunity to trigger the positivity. I love that I can use technology that way."
Williams also talks about believing in yourself and how she's inspiring others to follow their dreams, noted The YBF.
Highlights from the Wired article include Williams talking about following her childhood dream to help children and people in Africa by opening two schools in Kenya in 2008 and in 2010. She also discusses equality, saying that more women and people of different nationalities and colors should pursue careers in technology.
"That’s the reason I wanted to do this issue with WIRED—I’m a black woman, and I am in a sport that wasn’t really meant for black people. And while tennis isn’t really about the future, Silicon Valley sure is." Serena writes.
She also advocates for battling racism in the workforce with the NFL Rooney Rule.
"Equality is important. In the NFL, they have something called the Rooney rule." She writes. "It says that teams have to interview minority candidates for senior jobs. It’s a rule that companies in Silicon Valley are starting to follow too, and that’s great."
Inspired by "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, who spoke up against bullying this summer, Williams decided to speak up against bullying.
"When someone’s harassing someone else, speak up!" Serena writes in the Wired issue.
Wired magazine will release more stories written by Williams on a wide range of issues this week, so look out for more articles by the tennis champion.
