Vatican Pulls Commemorative Coins After Typo Reads 'Lesus' Instead of 'Jesus' (TWEETS)

The Vatican withdrew thousands of commemorative medals after a slip-up on the spelling of Jesus.

On the gold, silver and bronze minted coins, "Lesus" is inscribed on the edge as the name of the Christian savior, according to USA Today.

The medals were created to mark Pope Francis' climb to the papacy, and were released for sale on Tuesday. These commemorative coins are often bought by collectors around the world. Immediately after the Italian State mint produced 6,000 medals, they took a look and realized they'd made a typo, accidentally putting an "L" where the "J" in Jesus should have been.

The Vatican quickly pulled the flubbed coins, but not before four collectors managed to scoop them up during the sale. According to the Telegraph newspaper, this could render the coins quite valuable.

The medals bear the image of Pope Francis, along with a Latin phrase that he said led him to become a religious leader: "Jesus, therefore, sees the tax collector, and since he sees by having mercy and by choosing, he says to him, ' follow me.'" On the misspelled coins, the "J" in Jesus looks like an "L."

Twitter users were quick to respond, poking fun at the Vatican's slip-up.
