The missing marathon runner from Italy was found after he disappeared after finishing the New York City Marathon on Sunday. The runner is a recovering heroin addict and was found on a subway train.
Thirty-year-old Gianclaudio Marengo was still wearing his marathon attire when a police officer who was on his way to work saw him board a Manhattan train at 6:40 a.m. The officer brought Marengo to a police station, then proceeded to the New-York Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital since the missing runner was dehydrated, according to Fox News.
The NYPD recruitment officer, Man Yam, saw the missing runner sitting right in front of him inside the train while Yam was reading an article about the missing marathon runner at the time.
"The good thing about 6:45 [a.m.] is it's mostly construction workers [on the train], so this guy stuck out like a sore thumb," Yam said, according to the New York Post.
"The first thing I notice is he has dry lips. That's what happens when you go an extended amount of time without drinking water or if you're underground."
Marengo was lost for almost 40 hours. He resides at the San Patrignano Rehabilitation Center located on the Adriatic Coast. Matteo Diotalevi, spokesman of the center, said they have no idea what happened.
"We don't know what happened to him in New York," Diotalevi said, according to USA Today. "But he's a fragile person."
The missing marathon runner was with his group of eight Italian recovering drug users who decided to join the marathon, but they finished at different times.
"He is certainly a fragile, vulnerable and very emotional person who, after years of drug dependency, found the chance to recover in San Patrignano," the spokesman added.
