Lana, a 1-year-old Labrador mix that has been dubbed "The Saddest Dog in the World" has reason to smile again, as she was placed in a temporary foster home while her rescuers go through thousands of adoption applications.
The young dog's tragic picture, taken after she was returned to the Rescue Dogs Match (RDM) center by the family who adopted her, showed the downtrodden Lana leaning against a wall and looking very dejected. According to RDM, the heartbroken Lana simply "shut down," even refusing to go for walks, reports The Daily Mail.
Lana first arrived at the RDM center in Toronto as a puppy. She was the runt of a large litter in Mexico, and due to her experience fighting with her siblings for food, she developed the tendency to exhibit guarding issues.
Lana proved herself to be a sweet, young puppy, however. By the time she was five months old, she was adopted by a family. However, a year later, she started exhibiting behavioral issues when around food and unfamiliar people, according to ABC News.
After snapping at the mother, the family decided to return Lana to the center, especially since there were kids in the house. Upon arriving, the rejected Labrador became "The Saddest Dog in the World."
Upon uploading the tragic picture, thousand of adoption applications flooded the RDM website, causing the center's servers to crash. RDM has stated that it had to quickly establish alternate emails in order to handle the site's traffic.
While waiting for her new forever home, Lana will be staying with Dahlia Ayoub, the owner of Mighty Mutts Training and volunteer dog program and a coordinator for RDM. After just a few hours with her temporary foster mom, Lana was already in much better spirits.
Hopefully, this sweet girl can find her new forever home soon.
