San Diego: Active Gunman, Airport Ground Stop Issued, Police Standoff Underway (BREAKING)

An active gunman has been spotted near the San Diego Airport, forcing a ground stop to be issued at the airport, and prompting a standoff with police.

The suspect, who is barricaded on the southeast side of an apartment building near 2445 Brant St. in Little Italy, has fired multiple times at police with what has been described as a high-powered rifle, according to KTLA 5.

"Active gun fire. Residents near 2445 Brant St. Little Italy. Stay away from all windows until further notice and Shelter in place," San Diego police tweeted.

The San Diego Police Department were called to the area a little after 9 a.m. for a domestic violence call. However, when they arrived, they immediately came under fire. The gunfire continued after 10 a.m. local time and as of 11:30 a.m., the incident had not been resolved.

Police shut down streets in the area and were evacuating residents in the area as the standoff progressed.

Departures resumed at the airport in the meantime, though the ground stop is still in effect for arrivals, according to CNBC.

"We are allowing departures but we are not landing aircraft due to the active shooter situation under the approach path," the FAA said. "Airborne aircraft are either holding or diverting. We are holding San Diego-bound traffic in the Western U.S. at their departure airports."

Officials say police have the suspect contained in the one-bedroom apartment, reported NBC San Diego. They are working to communicate with the suspect and bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.

As the situation develops, the SDPD has urged the general media to not televise officer positions.

The suspect is not believed to have a hostage, but no one has been injured so far.
