Despite its statement that Twitter is committed to creating an effective, ethnically diverse workplace, the social media giant seems to be a bit off the mark. According to former Twitter engineering manager Leslie Miley, the company still has a long way to go in order to become fully diverse, The Huffington Post reported.
"With my departure, Twitter no longer has any managers, directors, or VPs of color in engineering or product management," Miley wrote in a post on Medium last Tuesday. MIley was among the 330 employees that were laid off last October. According to the former employee, he specifically opted out of the company's severance package in order to speak out about the racial issues at Twitter.
Miley further stated that Twitter was well aware of the lack of diversity in its workforce, with only a few black, Hispanic, or other people of color in several of the key departments. In fact, he even stated that he raised the issue in a number of meetings with the upper management, reports CNET.
"Each of these moments caused me to rethink what role I was playing at Twitter and in tech and how I could participate in dismantling what I describe as the diversity problem in tech," he said. "I want to be a leader in eliminating environments where I am the only African-American in engineering leadership."
The former manager is quite optimistic about the company's future though, stating that he believes that current Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey, will bring about significant change.
"It is my belief that Jack understands the use case of Twitter better than anyone else, understands how diversity can be additive to growth, and is committed to making that happen," Miley said.
