The name's Sigman, Stephanie Sigman.
American audiences are about to become familiar with the young and beautiful Mexican-American actress in a big way. Sigman has already played important roles in FX's "The Bridge" and Netflix's "Narcos," and her first big break came in 2011's critically acclaimed "Miss Bala." But now she has the enviable title of Bond Girl and will be palling around with 007 in "Spectre," which hits theaters today.
In advance of her breakout role, here are five things you need to know about Sigman.
1. She is the first Mexican actress to play a Bond Girl
Sigman is of American descent on her father's side, but she was born in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico in 1987. This makes her the first Mexican actress to play a Bond Girl in the official Eon series, which kicked off with "Dr. No" way back in 1962. Fellow Mexican actress Linda Christian played the role of Valerie Mathis in the 1954 TV adaptation of "Casino Royale," but we only count the big screen around here.
"It's such an honor for me," Sigman said in an interview with the Miami Herald. "It means a lot and is something I think a lot of actresses and a lot of girls dream of being. I feel so lucky and blessed that I get to work with these people who are amazing, and they make me feel very welcome. It feels great to be a Bond girl."
Sigman will be featured in the film's highly hyped Mexio City sequences.
2. She loves Spiderwoman
Gorgeous, talented and into comic books? Socially awkward high school boys are fainting all across the country. But it's true, Sigman is a Webhead at heart.
"I specifically am into Spiderman and Spiderwoman, the comic books," she said. "Spiderwoman from the '80s is so sexy, and I think it's also because I did gymnastics for a long time. Visually I think it is amazing what that superhero and Spiderwoman can do. But even more than being a comic nerd or fan, I just specifically have a thing for Spiderman and Spiderwoman."
Sigman is undoubtedly looking forward to the Wall Crawler's inclusion into the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year.
3. Her choice of drink is vodka
The type of drink one likes says a lot about his or her character. If Sigman's preference is any indication, she's as cool as she seems and will easily be able to hold her own with James Bond.
"Of course I am a vodka girl," said Sigman. "And when you drink a martini, there are so many variations, you can decide based on your mood. Right now I am very into this Belvedere Spectre martini, which is with a Sicilian olive, and it is so good. And of course, shaken, not stirred."
Well played, Sigman. Well played.
4. She admires Selma Hayek and Kate Hudson
Every young up-and-coming star has someone they look up to, someone they aspire to be like. Sigman has two such figures in her life, and both are great targets to shoot for.
"There is a lot of inspiration out there," she said. "Right now I really enjoy following on Instagram Selma Hayek - she is great - and Kate Hudson. And I admire those women because they have been in this business for a long time, and they are so good at what they do. And they work hard, and that's what my dad and my mom taught me when I was young - to work hard."
Hayek was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in 2002's "Frida," as was Hudson for 2000's "Almost Famous." Hopefully, Sigman isn't far behind.
5. Her father works for the New York Yankees
She may have been born in Mexico, but Sigman has an innate affinity for America's pastime. Her father is a scout for the New York Yankees, so it's in her blood.
"I grew up in baseball stadiums," Sigman told Vanity Fair. "I knew nothing about film or acting or theater when I was young!"
"Spectre," the 24th James Bond film in the series, is directed by Sam Mendes ("Skyfall") and stars Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz ("Django Unchained"), Lea Seydoux ("Inglorious Basterds") and Monica Belucci ("The Matrix Revolutions").
