You always need your mother, no matter what age you are. If you're living on your own away from home, how many times have you wished your mom was there with you as you deal with life's daily challenges?
Going by this thought, a mom from New York gave birth to the idea of setting up a rent-a-mom service for 20-somethings who need maternal support. It's aptly called Need A Mom, even if it's a "short-term, temporary mom."
Nina Keneally, 63, a theater producer and former drug counsellor, established the company with millennials in mind, according to Yahoo Parenting. "Mostly they just want somebody to talk to," said Keneally. "I don't claim to be an expert, but I've been around the block enough to be helpful."
"As I started to live in the neighborhood, do yoga and frequent coffee shops, I've noticed that a lot of young people in the neighborhood wanted to talk to me about what was going on in their lives," she told Bushwick Daily.
"I have a therapeutic background, although I'm not a therapist," she added. "I can talk you through it, but if you have a serious problem, I have a list of resources and can send you to a doctor or a specialist."
Among the services she provides include:
- Sharing a cup of coffee or wine with you
- Accompanying you to the movies
- Reviewing and editing your resume
- Ironing your clothes for that job interview
- Baking pies for you
- Buying and sending your real mom a present
The service makes it clear that the mom-for-hire is neither a maid nor a therapist, but she will be able to provide motherly support. She can cook you chicken soup when you're sick or talk about your struggles in the city. "One started crying about being fired, how it wasn't her fault, and I said, 'Well let's go and sit and talk about it.' So incidents like that," she told Yahoo Parenting.
The service is limited in the Bushwick area in Brooklyn for now, as this is where Keneally is based, but her idea has been drawing comfort among plenty of people, according to Mommyish. Maybe this start-up is on to something big.
