Yahoo updated its Yahoo Mail with visually rich themes, brand new conversations view, and a lot more in celebration of its 16th birthday.
The update is part of the company’s goal to compete with Google Mail’s features, keep million of its users, and invite new users. Yahoo decided to invest into its web-based mail platform by making each user’s experience on the desktop, iOS, and Android mobile operating systems more spontaneous.
Jeffrey Bonforte, senior vice president of Communication Products at Yahoo, said in a blog post, “We’re introducing ‘conversations’ for those who prefer to view e-mails grouped in threads. At the end of the day, being able to see an entire conversation can save you quite a bit of time. Context is king.”
“Since it’s not a birthday without party favors, we’re making many features previously reserved for premium Mail Plus customers free. Disposable e-mail addresses, enhanced filters and automatic message forwarding are now available for everyone. And if that wasn’t enough, we’re giving you a monstrous amount of storage, 1TB (that’s 1,000 GBs), so you have ample space for all your e-mails and attachments,” he added.
Activities users mostly do like searching, deleting, and etc., are now one-click away. They just have to move the mouse pointer over an e-mail. Another improvement in the Yahoo Mail is the collapsible left-hand toolbar.
Lastly, one improvement that will surely entice crafty and artistic users, are the visually rich themes that Yahoo is going to introduce. These visually rich themes include Flickr photos from your browser and smartphones. Users can opt for a new photo theme in one place and spread it across all their devices.
Ross Rubin, a principal analyst at Reticle Research, told Sci-Tech Today that the company had to let go of its other fringe services just to place funding on Yahoo Mail and Flickr.
“Yahoo Mail still has millions of users. Owning the inbox is valuable in terms of ad serving and it’s a conduit for other services. It keeps people engaged and logged in. Even prior to this Yahoo had been differentiating with storage. Whereas Gmail has generous caps, Yahoo had gone with an unlimited version,” Rubin said.
