Kentucky Police Officer Daniel Ellis was announced dead Friday morning, after being fatally shot in the head two days prior while pursuing a robbery suspect in an apartment, according to the Associated Press. Raleigh Sizemore Jr., the 34-year-old suspect in the case, is an ex-con.
Sizemore was alleged to have robbed an elderly woman at a gas station, which Ellis and a partner were responding to. Ellis was shot in the head when he entered the apartment and returned fire. While Ellis later died, his shooter, Sizemore, did not, The Washington Post reported.
The Richmond officer died at the University of of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, according to police sources. The Richmond Police Department has issued a statement about the death of Ellis. "The Richmond Police Department is extremely grateful for the prayers and support that have been extended to Officer Daniel Ellis, his family, friends, and fellow officers," the statement said.

"It's just heartbreaking," Richmond Mayor Jim Barnes said, according to AP. "It's an emotional time for everyone in the community. Those guys work so hard to protect the city."
Ellis' police cruiser, which is parked in front of the police department, is now a place where people come to grieve and pay respect to the slain officer. "It's packed with flowers," said Richmond Police Major Steve Gregg. "People are driving by and telling us how sorry they are and that we have their support. That means a lot to us."
