A six-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool on a Carnival Cruise ship on Sunday, Reuters reported.
"The boy was apparently playing with his 10-year-old brother in the pool when they suddenly found him at the bottom," said Detective Javier Baez of the Miami-Dade Police Department.
"They attempted to administer CPR however, unfortunately, they were not successful," he added.
Baez said the Carnival Victory ship was making it's last stop in a tour of the Caribbean when the boy, identified as Qwentyn Hunter, drowned after swimming with his 10-year-old brother. The pool, which was "pretty packed" at the time of the incident, did not have lifeguards.
"Parental supervision is required for children under 13. In this case there was a parent present at the time of the incident," Carnival spokeswoman Joyce Oliva said.
Passenger Shaina Shaw, who tried to perform CPR on Hunter, recalled the incident to CBS Miami as she choked back tears.
"Everyone was crying, the family was distraught. They had to pull the mother away and the father. The father was next to his son pleading and begging his son to stay alive," Shaw said.
"Poor family has to go on vacation with their child and have to come back without them, it's not fair, it's not fair."
Officials from Miami-Dade Police Homicide Bureau arrived at the ship on Monday to question witnesses, including the boy's family from Winter Garden, Fla.
Police said foul play is not suspected and the investigation is still underway.
Carnival Corps & Plc has been struggling to restore it's reputation following the sinking of their Costa Concordia ship last year, killing 32 people. They released a statement expressing their sympathy to Hunter's family.
"Yesterday, Oct. 13, on board the Carnival Victory, while the ship was at sea on the last leg of a four-day Caribbean cruise, a six-year-old boy drowned in the midship pool. He was at the pool area with other family members at the time.
"Carnival extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family during this very difficult time. The company's CareTeam is providing assistance and support."
