UPDATE : was not filmed in 48fps
For months fans have been clamoring for information regarding the next installment in the X-Men franchise from Marvel, "Days of Future Past." Now new reports are surfacing indicating that the upcoming film was shot and will be released in 48 frames per second.
The technology is known as "high-frame rate (HFR). The most recent use of this, according to IGN, was by Peter Jackson for the filming of "The Hobbit" trilogy. The technology proved controversial as many people felt it made all of the CGI special effects in the movie far too noticeable. Traditionally the film rate used by most cameras has been locked at 24 frames per second (fps). Because 24 fps is so synonymous with movie-making, many feel that the increase loses some of the cinematic feel.
The news comes from Ain't It Cool, which reportedly cites two unnamed sources that have confirmed the story. According to the second source, the filmmakers held off on the announcement in light of the negative reception the technology received from the filming of The Hobbit. However, director Bryan Singer and the rest of the crew reportedly stand by the results of the film and feel the 48fps rate gives the film a little extra something.
Like The Hobbit, the 48fps technology will not be a mandatory part of seeing the film. Like a 3D feature, audiences will be able to choose which frame rate they wish to see the film in based on what showing they attend.
The film will combine characters and actors from all of the X-Men movies to date including young and old versions of characters Charles Xavier and Magneto. It is based on one of the most beloved storylines in the comic's history.
