The cardigan worn by the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain during his band's now-iconic 1993 MTV "Unplugged" performance sold for $137,500 during an auction in Los Angeles, Time magazine reported. The olive green sweater sold for more than twice its estimated worth of $60,000 at Julien's Auctions' 2015 Icons and Idols Rock n' Roll auction on Saturday.
"The Manhattan brand sweater is a blend of acrylic, mohair and Lycra with five-button closure (one button absent), with two exterior pockets, a burn hole and discoloration near left pocket and discoloration on right pocket, size medium," read a description of the sweater on the Julien's Auctions website.
The sweater sold alongside other Nirvana memorabilia, like the gold record for the band's third and final album "In Utero," and the platinum record for the band's 1991 breakout album "Nevermind," according to Spin. Julien's was also scheduled to sell a lock of Cobain's hair, but pulled the item after it sparked controversy.
Another notable item that sold at Julien's is Elvis Presley's gold leaf piano and John Lennon's 1962 Gibson J-160E guitar, as previously reported by HNGN. The late Beatle used the guitar to record some of the Beatles' most legendary hits like "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You." The guitar sold for $2.4 million.
