Both teams topped their respective groups and begin the first leg of the playoffs, Goal.com reports. Egypt rolled into the playoffs after winning all six of their qualifiers to claim the No. 1 spot in Group G, thanks in part to Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Aboutrika, the squad's top scorers.
Ghana, however, is the next obstacle standing in Egypt's way of reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1990.
"We studied Ghana well," said Egypt manager Bob Bradley, via Goal.com. "We respect them, but at the same time we are a good team. We must be smart in Kumasi. We need to play with the right mentality; intellectually but with confidence."
Ghana dominated their group and easily clinched the top spot in Group D with a four-point lead over second-place Zambia. The national team's confidence is bolstered even more by the fact that they haven't lost at home since 2008. Still, Ghana boss Kwesi Appiah made certain his squad understood the magnitude of Tuesday's match.
"It's a big game, a game which is important to all Ghanians," Appiah, according to Goal.com. "Every member on my team is aware of that. Egypt are seven-time African champions and trying to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1990. That will give them some added boost going into the game.
"Their record in its sense means that we cannot look down on them. We can't get complacent. We have to prepare well and remain focused."
