Living things breathe: trees, bracken, flowers, weeds, vines and everything else that makes up the forest floor. So, when Brian Nuttall happened upon this "breathing" earth floor on a crisp, windy autumn day, was he witnessing Mother Nature doing her thing? Lucky for us, Nuttall had the where-with-all to pull out his phone and film this incredible scene of nature in harmony, says the Daily Mail.
During a walk in Apple River in Canada's Nova Scotia, Nuttall captured the footage on Oct. 30, causing a host of varying comments. Everything from "scary as hell" and "eerie" to "mother nature breathes," according to Grind TV.
There is an explanation for the breathing.
"I believe the larger trees are doomed to blow down, but are currently spared, the smaller trees around them help hold each other up, as the wind pushes the trees into one another," Nutall said. "The punishing prevailing winds have taken their toll on the side hill, the roots have loosened and the mossy ground from the once shaded forest floor is giving way, soon to be toppled over. It's likely only a matter of time before the wind wins out and the trees fall."
Social media users had their own ideas.
"I had some trees in a past home that I lived in," a Facebook user said, replying to Nuttall's Oct. 31 post of the phenomenon, according to the Inquisitr. "The roots are all interconnected, and when the wind blew the top of the huge tree, the ground moved like this at least two feet up and down."
"The dead trees died awhile back...their roots causing space underground," another Facebook user commented. "The ground on (the) surface with the moss is very soft, the roots from the good trees standing are spread across the surface of the ground so when the wind blows... the ground moves with the roots... this is just my theory."
Whether you need a true explanation for this incredible moment in time Nuttall captured, or you can just enjoy the "breathing," maybe we can all agree on one thing: This footage is spectacular.
