Syrian media reported Wednesday that Israel Air Force (IAF) warplanes have carried out an air strike near the international airport in the Syrian capital of Damascus.
The military sites near the Damascus airport were targeted in a Wednesday morning air raid, according to Syrian media, Haaretz reported. The target of the air strike was not clear.
Some unconfirmed reports said that the target of the Israeli air strike was an arms shipment for Lebanon-based Islamic militia Hezbollah, according to i24news. There has been no confirmation of IAF attacks from the Israeli side.
The Damascus airport air strike would be the second Israeli attack on Syrian soil since Russia launched an anti-ISIS offensive in the war-torn country, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said earlier that Israel would not tolerate Iran's support to his country's enemies. Hezbollah, which supports Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime forces in the fight against opposition rebels, is believed to be getting weapons and military support from Iran.
"Israel will not tolerate Tehran's efforts to arm Israel's enemies in the region. Jerusalem has taken and will continue to take action against any such attempts. This is our right and also our duty. There were no objections to our rights and to what I said," Netanyahu had said, according to ARA News.
