For the second year, the public will be able to participate in the selection process in nominating inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with ground-breakers to choose from like Hall and Oates, YES, and N.W.A.
The 2014 inductees are chosen by a secret ballot of over 600 individual voters consisting of all past inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, musicians, historians, critics and members of the music industry, a Hall of Fame press release reported.
The top five artists, as selected by the public, will constitute a "fans' ballot" that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2014 inductees.
CEO and President of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Joel Peresman told USA Today that "this year's nominees represent the broad definition of 'rock 'n' roll' and include an array of artists whose fans are deeply passionate about the possibility of induction."
Among the 16 nominees are the grunge group Nirvana who are nominated in their first year of eligibility, a first for the Museum, and other first-time nominees include Linda Ronstadt, Peter Gabriel, Hall & Oates and Yes, USA Today reported.
Returning names from last year's ballot include Chic, Deep Purple and The Meters, along with hip-hop "luminaries" N.W.A. and LL Cool J.
CNN reported that rock fans may be investing in the fates of Nirvana and KISS, two of the more influential bands of their time. According to the Rock Hall press release, "few bands short of the Beatles inspired more kids to pick up the guitar than KISS."
Another favorite might be N.W.A, who are repeat nominees, producing three studio albums during their career with songs like "Straight Outta Compton" which was so influential upon its release in 1988 that the FBI sent letters to the group's record label, CNN reported.
Voting open to the public begins Oct. 16 through Dec. 10. Votes can be placed through the Hall of Fame's website.
