Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg and Barbra Streisand, known for her multifaceted life and career, will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the White House confirmed on Monday.
Other honorees include baseball legend Willie Mays, Sen. Barbra Mikulski, singer James Taylor, producer Emilio Estefan, singer-songwriter Gloria Estefan and conductor Itzhak Perlman. Stephen Sondheim, who was chosen to receive the award last year but was unable to attend the ceremony, will be among the recipients who will be presented White House's highest civilian award by President Barack Obama on Nov. 24, according to Time.
"I look forward to presenting these 17 distinguished Americans with our nation's highest civilian honor," Obama said in a statement. "From public servants who helped us meet defining challenges of our time to artists who expanded our imaginations, from leaders who have made our union more perfect to athletes who have inspired millions of fans, these men and women have enriched our lives and helped define our shared experience as Americans."
Posthumous honorees of the award include Yogi Berra, Shirley Chisholm, Bonnie Carroll and Billy Frank, Jr.
Last year's honorees of the Presidential Medal of Freedom included Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Stevie Wonder and Tom Brokaw, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
