The Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, and St. Louis Rams are all reportedly expected to apply for relocation this upcoming January. These three NFL franchises will reportedly have to pay a fee between $500 million and $600 million respectively for each team that moves to Los Angeles, according to Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal.
The fee decision is not concrete and could be subject to change, according to Kaplan. While the three franchises are expected to apply in January, a vote reportedly could come as last as March.
The Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee to become the Titans in the mid-1990s, and reportedly paid $29 million to make the move, according to Kevin Duchschere of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The Rams, Chargers, and Raiders are all moving forward with plans to relocate in Los Angeles.
Rams owner Stan Kroenke's plan to move the Rams to Inglewood has some hurdles to deal with, as the Federal Aviation Administration released a report stating the new stadium in Inglewood would be hazardous to air navigation. While Kroenke and the Rams have to deal with that issue, the Chargers and Raiders have hired Disney CEO Bob Iger to head up their Carson Project.
A $600 million fee would be worth a third of each franchise that is trying to move, as the Chargers ($1.525 billion), Rams ($1.45 billion), and Raiders ($1.43 billion) are all worth under $1.8 billion, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Things may change in the next couple weeks, as more news and reports are released on the possible relocation of three NFL franchises.
