Harley-Davidson Recall: Clutch Issue Forces Recall of Almost 30,000 Motorcycles

An issue with a the hydraulic clutch system has forced Harley-Davidson to issue a voluntary recall for close to 30,000 motorcycles in their 2014 touring and CVO line, according to MotorcycleUSA.com.

The Milwaukee based company has issued a "Do Not Ride" notice to owners of the bikes and a "Do Not Deliver" notice to dealers until the issue is taken care of, according to a press release from Harley-Davidson.

The defect may cause the hydraulic clutch system to be unable to disengage; if the clutch does not disengage a rider may be unable to slow down or stop the motorcycle which could lead to a crash, according to the press release.

"The safety of our customers is our highest priority," Tony Wilcox, General Manager of Motorcycle New Product Delivery for Harley-Davidson, said in the press release. "We have identified potential safety issues and are moving quickly to notify our customers and dealers. The inspection and repair of these motorcycles is extremely important, so it's critical that our customers with affected vehicles contact their dealers immediately.

"We apologize for this circumstance," Wilcox continues. "The company is committed to correcting this issue and providing customers with the quality experience and service they expect."

The following models are being recalled:

Touring:

FLHXS - Touring Street Glide Special

FLHTCU - Electra Glide Ultra Classic

FLHTK - Ultra Limited

FLHTP - Electra Glide Police

FLHX - Street Glide

FLHXS - New Street Glide Special

FLHTKSE - CVO Limited

FLHRSE - CVO Road King

Softail CVOs and Trikes:

FLHTCUTG - Tri Glide Ultra

FXSBSE - CVO Breakout

FLSTNSE - CVO Deluxe

Owners of the affected motorcycles should contact their dealer as soon as possible to arrange for an inspection. Do not drive to the dealer, the dealer will come pick up the motorcycle, inspect it, fix it if necessary and return it at no cost to the owner. More often than not it should only take about an hour, according to the press release.

Due to the government shutdown the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration was closed; therefore they could not issue a recall notice and Harley-Davidson is acting in a way that is consistent with the NHTSA's process, according to Reuters.
