Two girls shopping at a Victoria's Secret store in midtown New York were stopped by a security guard who discovered that one of the girls was carrying a grisly package with her; a bag with a dead fetus inside, according to the Associated Press.
The store alerted the police when the security guard smelled a strong odor coming from the bag held by one of the 17-year-old girls and found the fetus inside. The two girls were arrested and charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, according to the Associated Press.
The police have not charged the girl with a crime related to the dead fetus as of yet, an autopsy will determine if any more serious charges are warranted, the Associated Press reports.
The 17-year-old told police that she had been roughly 6 months pregnant when she miscarried the child on Wednesday. The baby did not show any signs of trauma initially, according to NBC News.
The girl, who has a young son, told authorities that she was still carrying the remains because she did not know what she was supposed to do. It is unclear if the baby was alive or dead when it was delivered, according to the Associated Press.
"She's a good girl. I can't believe she would do that," Zami Ford, one of the girl's neighbors, told the New York Daily News. "Who the h*** would do that? That's sickening?"
Ford told the New York Daily News that the girl lived with her mother and her young son. Ford was not even aware that the girl was pregnant.
"She goes to school. She does what she has to do. She's no problem," Ford said. "We grew up together. I've known her since she was little. She was probably nervous and didn't know what to do. She would never hurt anyone."
