A Tulane University Medical student was shot Friday while trying to stop an armed robbery in New Orleans.
The explicit footage shows 25-year-old Peter Gold attempting to stop a man, who was dragging a woman down a street early Friday morning. The woman falls and the man takes her purse. As Gold confronts him, he is shot by the unidentified assailant. The woman is not shown to be injured, according to The Washington Post.
"The victim explained to the suspect, repeatedly, that he did not have any cash. The suspect became enraged and shot the victim once in the stomach," NOPD said in a news release.
Gold was passing by as he witnessed the woman being dragged down the street and went to help. The gunman had attempted to shoot Gold a second time, but luckily, the gun jammed. He then took the woman's purse and fled in an SUV. Gold is said to be in a "guarded" condition at a hospital while the NOPD is out looking for the suspect, The Blaze reported.
The entire event was shot through a business's security camera. The situation happened on Magazine Street at 4 am Friday. Gold is a fourth-year medical student of the Tulane Medical School. Michele Adams, who taught Gold while he was an undergraduate sociology student, said that she was shocked to hear of the news but was not surprised that Gold would risk his own safety for someone else.
Below is the video of the robbery. Viewer discretion is advised, as it displays gun shooting.
"Peter is really one of the nicest people you would ever meet, and he is an amazing student, I'm sure, even in med school," Adams said.
Gold was chosen among 60 students for his department's "Outstanding Student" award. The Tulane University is offering $10,000 as reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the assailant.
Gold is expected to make a full recovery, and the woman was found by the police at the sidewalk and treated for minor injuries, according to The Advocate.
