Louisville moved to 6-0 after defeating Rutgers last week. The story of the game was the Cardinals' defense, which stepped up and limited Rutgers to 10 points as the offense struggled to produce.
Bridgewater, who some analysts expect to go No. 1 in the 2014 NFL draft, didn't look himself against Rutgers. He overthrew receivers and had a fourth quarter fumble, something uncharacteristic of the signal caller. Although NFL scouts were in the stadium for the Rutgers game, Cardinals coach Charlie Strong refuted the idea that Bridgewater struggled because of the pressure to impress.
"I don't think Teddy gets rattled with that," Strong told reporters, via ESPN. "He didn't make some throws, but I guess every time he goes out we expect him to be perfect and he's not going to be perfect. People do have bad games.
"We have raised the standard and he plays p to what we want him to play at. ... We won the football game."
Bridgewater has met the expectations placed on him, and he's making a strong case for the Heisman Trophy. Through six games, Bridgewater completed 71 percent of his passes for 1,872 yards, 18 touchdowns and only two interceptions.
Despite the Cardinals' offensive struggles last week, Strong pointed to the win against Rutgers as an example of a total team effort.
"What's happening this season is all three phases are playing together," Strong said. "Even if one phase isn't playing together, the other phases can pick it up and that's what's great about it. We're six games into it and want to continue to get better."
UCF, meanwhile, is 4-1 on the season. Running back Storm Johnson has rushed for 455 yards and seven touchdowns; quarterback Blake Bortles has completed 92-of-142 passes for 1,334 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions.
