Windows Phone 7.8 Update Suspended Until Further Notice From Microsoft

Nokia confirmed Microsoft's decision of suspending the Windows Phone 7.8 update for Nokia Lumia 800, Lumia 900, Lumia 710, and Lumia 610 handsets due to a minor issue.

Windows Phone users have been eagerly awaiting the Windows Phone 7.8 update. But another delay in updating the older Windows phones, which was predicted by Omio that the update would be available by the end of January, has left many anticipated Nokia Lumia users upset.

Ray Haddow, Senior Manager, at Nokia UK Communications, addressed the suspension of the Windows Phone 7.8 due to a minor issue.

"Microsoft has identified a minor issue in the Windows Phone 7.8 update and have temporarily paused delivery until it's addressed. We'll have more information as it becomes available," Haddow said in a statement, reported Omio.

No details on the "minor issue" which called of the Windows Phone 7.8 update were shared by Microsoft. But a live tiles issue which was noticed by one user who updated to Windows Phone 7.8 surely made the news. Heathcliff74 of WP7RootTools shared his experience after he did the update and noticed the battery and data was almost drained without using the phone much.

"Another thing I had noticed right after the update to WP 7.8 was that one of the pinned live tiles was empty," Heathclif74 wrote, addressing the live tiles issue. "I did not really pay further attention to it and I assumed the app would be updated soon enough if this was a real problem. But now I realized, that live-tiles needed to be updated and not much else is using data at that moment."

Many users have been experiencing similar problems with their live tiles not being updated automatically addressed their issues on the Windows Phone Development Forums.

Mark Chamberlain Sr. Escalation Engineer, Microsoft Developer Support, addressed the issue and suggested few steps to be tried before resetting the phone which according to him would be the "last resort."

He suggested "blocking all the background tasks in Settings->applications->background tasks and setting the checkbox for those apps that you wish to restart the next time you start the app," which worked for a few users.

Chamberlain also noted the two issues which have been experienced by the users"

1. Live tile causing continuous web requests (and side effects such as battery drain)

2. Live tile failing to update.

Since no information or resolution has been updated so far as Microsoft continues to work around to get a quick resolution, Chamberlain suggested a temporary fix is "by unpinning and repinning the live tiles."

The Windows Update 7.8 update is likely to have most of the features that Microsoft Windows 8 OS includes. The new features which will be an added value with the Windows Update 7.8 update will include customizable three sizes of live tiles, with their 20 different colors, according to an Omia report. Furthermore features like Internet sharing, Bluetooth sharing, image enhancements and for camera Contact Share Play To and Nokia City Lens reality app are included.
