The Brooklyn Nets lost their first seven games of the season and although they have won three games since they still sit at 3-11 and seem to be headed for a rough season. With the bad start it has gotten many wondering whether the Nets might consider trading some of their players to get some assets for the future and that is a fair question but as of right now owner Mikhail Prokhorov seems to be preaching patience, according to Andy Vasquez of The Record.
This is the worst start the Nets have gotten off to since moving to Brooklyn yet Prokhorov, who is usually anything but patient, is saying that we need to give it more time before we can truly judge this team.
"It's simply too early to draw any conclusions about the team, we have a lot of new players and quite a few younger pieces, so it takes some time for the team to gel and to show its full potential. I think we've seen some positive progress, and my hope is that these efforts will soon be reflected in the wins column," said Prokhorov.
Since Prokhorov has taken over as owner of the Nets they have been known to make big trades but that doesn't seem to be the direction they are looking for now. Nets fans likely want the team to look to trade one of their players for a first round pick because they don't have one in this upcoming draft but the issue is they don't have many tradable pieces.
The Nets' best asset is likely Brook Lopez who also happens to be their best player and he isn't even eligible to be traded until the middle of January after he signed a three year contract with the Nets this offseason. Thaddeus Young and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson are nice pieces as well but the Nets are highly unlikely to trade them so it seems like the only player they would likely trade is Joe Johnson.
Johnson is an interesting player to look at because he is in the final year of his massive contract and is the second highest paid player in the NBA this season but he is not playing like it. Because of his expiring contract and his experience teams might be interested in a potential trade for Johnson but the question is would the Nets be able to get anything worthwhile back for him. Right now the answer is probably no but that could change if Johnson starts to play better within the next couple of weeks.
Right now Prokhorov is preaching patience and that's really his only option at this point. If there were good future assets to go get the Nets would likely be out there looking to make trades but right now they just don't have anyone to really trade so the hope is that they turn their season around and somehow sneak into the playoffs so that they don't have to deal with the Boston Celtics having their lottery pick.
