A 65-year-old man shot and killed two women at the senior citizen complex he was living in on Sunday, the Detroit Free Press reported.
The incident occurred at Pablo Davis Elder Living Center in Detroit after the man, whose name has not been released, and his girlfriend got in an argument at 5:30 p.m.
He then got a rifle from his apartment and began a hunt for the two women he claimed caused the end of his relationship with his girlfriend, officials said. The first victim was a 54-year-old friend of his girlfriend, shot and pronounced dead on arrival at Henry Ford Hospital. The second victim, 65, was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Detroit Police spokesperson Kelly Miner, the names of the shooter and victims have not been released because officials are still in the process of notifying families.
Miner also said the suspect surrendered and was immediately detained by police. The senior center, which has around 80 housing units, was evacuated and residents were placed on a police bus.
"I didn't see the rifle until he got right on top of us," witness Paul Fratangelo told The Detroit News. "I said 'Oh, my God ...' He said 'Get on the ground and start praying.'
"It was the grace of God that he didn't shoot me. I really thought he was going to shoot me. I thought it was over. Instead, he shot both my friends."
Will Staples, another resident at the center, said he came back from a Lions game to find the entire complex barricaded by police.
"Everyone knows everyone in here, but they were all good friends," Staples said. "People called them the Three Musketeers," he said while talking about the two victims and the alleged gunman's girlfriend.
Authorities said the ex-girlfriend was never one of the man's targets.
