Sparks Middle School Update: Two Killed, Two Injured During Shooting; Code Red Lifted

A shooting at Sparks Middle School in Nevada left two dead and two injured on Monday morning, CNN reported.

On the Washoe County School District Twitter, officials said the middle school is still an active crime scene though the code red has been lifted.

It is believed the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound but has not been confirmed. The other victims have yet to be identified as teachers or faculty members and no names have been released.

"Two subjects are deceased and two juvenile victims have been transported to a local hospital. We believe the subject responsible is deceased but that is not confirmed. The school has been cleared. We don't have any other confirmed specifics at this time," said Rocky Triplett, commander of the Sparks Police Department.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that a 13-year-old student, Kyle Nucum, witnessed a student shoot his teacher after he tried to convince the student to put his gun down.

"The teacher fell and everybody ran away," Nucum said. "We ran across the field to get somewhere safe, and while we were running we heard about four or five more gunshots."

His story has not yet been verified.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid released a statement expressing his support to the school and community.

"My condolences go out to the victims' families and my thoughts are with the teachers, administrators, parents and students at Sparks Middle School who have experienced a traumatic morning. No words of condolence could possibly ease the pain, but I hope it is some small comfort that Nevada mourns with them. I stand by to be of any assistance if there is anything that can be done and I will continue to monitor the situation," the statement read.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval also issued a statement after reports of the shooting.

"I was deeply saddened to learn of the horrific shooting at Sparks Middle School this morning. My administration is receiving regular updates and the Nevada Highway Patrol is assisting at the scene," he said.

Sparks is located right outside of Reno.
